Nappy rash is a common issue for babies and toddlers, often caused by prolonged contact with urine or faeces, infrequent nappy changes, friction from the nappy, or allergic reactions to soaps and detergents. It can range from mild to severe and isn’t necessarily due to you. So please do not blame yourself!

Frequent nappy changes, thorough cleaning, and using barrier creams usually help improve the condition.

Causes of Nappy Rash

Wet or dirty skin: Prolonged contact with urine or faeces, which contain ammonia, can irritate the skin.

Friction: Rubbing from the nappy or clothing.

Thrush: Candida Albicans yeast thrives in warm, moist areas, causing red, shiny rashes with clear edges.

Diet: Acidic foods like oranges, strawberries, and tomatoes can contribute.

Skin conditions: Eczema, psoriasis, infections, and allergies can exacerbate nappy rash.

Prevention and Treatment

Keep the area clean and dry: Change nappies frequently, at least six times a day and after every bowel movement.

Use barrier creams: Apply regularly to protect the skin.

Disposable nappies: These keep the skin drier than cloth nappies.

Loose nappies: Allow air circulation to help the rash heal.

Nappy-free time: Let your baby kick without a nappy daily to reduce friction.

Avoid irritants: Don’t use talcum powder or antiseptic wipes, and choose gentle baby washes.
